Hollowed-out Blue-and-White Meiping Vase with Floral Design
Vase is a kind of vessels with a small mouth, a big belly and a slender figure, originally used to contain liquid such as water, wine, or other drinks. Since the Song Dynasty (960-1279),however, the vases, especially those marked with a graceful and flowing curve, had rather become a piece of porcelain for display due to its exquisite craftsmanship, precious materials, and withal its remarkable shape, both vigorous and concise, both casual and elegant.
Meiping vase could be identified from all other Chinese ancient wares with certain distinguised features, usually a small mouth, a short neck and a broad shoulder. Such a particular kind of molding only allowed one spray of plum blossom to be put in, and thus the vase acquired its name.
Meiping vase is not only used as wine vessel, but more often as a piece of porcelain for display.
